What is Tilt Table Testing?

Some individuals experience repeated fainting and lightheadedness due to conditions like orthostatic hypotension, vasovagal syncope, or POTS. We use tilt table testing to evaluate these conditions. During the test, the patient is securely attached to a table while doctors monitor blood pressure, heart rhythm, and vital signs. The patient is then tilted upright while still strapped to the table. This test helps us explain confusing symptoms and tailor a treatment program to prevent future episodes.

Tilt table testing is crucial for diagnosing conditions that cause fainting and lightheadedness. It helps doctors assess how the body responds to changes in position, identify the root cause of symptoms, and develop a personalized treatment plan. The goal is to improve the patient’s quality of life and reduce the likelihood of future episodes.

How the Test Works:
  • Patient Preparation: Before the test, we secure the patient to a tilt table and connect them to equipment that continuously monitors blood pressure, heart rhythm, and other vital signs throughout the procedure.
  • Monitoring Process: Doctors take baseline measurements while the patient lies flat on the table. Then, they tilt the patient upright at a controlled angle. While this simulates standing up, vital signs are continuously recorded. The doctor observes any abnormal changes in blood pressure or heart rate.
  • Observing Responses: If the test reveals abnormal changes in blood pressure or heart rate, it can help diagnose conditions like:
    • Orthostatic Hypotension: A significant drop in blood pressure when standing.
    • Vasovagal Syncope: A sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, often triggered by stress or standing.
    • POTS: An abnormal increase in heart rate when standing without a corresponding drop in blood pressure.
Benefits of Tilt Table Testing:
  • Accurate Diagnosis:
Tilt table testing clarifies the causes of fainting or lightheadedness, conditions that may be difficult to diagnose based on symptoms alone.
  • Tailored Treatment:
The test results allow doctors to create a personalized treatment plan to prevent future episodes. This plan may include lifestyle changes, medication, or physical therapy.
  • Non-invasive:
The procedure is non-invasive, safe, and provides valuable insights into the body’s cardiovascular response to positional changes.

Tilt table testing is a highly effective diagnostic tool for identifying conditions related to fainting and lightheadedness. By evaluating the body’s response to positional changes, it helps doctors understand the underlying cause of symptoms and develop a targeted treatment plan. This approach improves the patient’s quality of life and reduces the risk of recurrent episodes.
