Echocardiography
What is Echocardiography?
Echocardiography is a safe, non-invasive technique that creates detailed images of the heart, including the valves, chambers, and blood flow. High-frequency ultrasound is directed at the chest, and the reflected sound waves form a two-dimensional image.
This method helps detect subtle heart issues that may not be visible during a physical exam and is particularly useful for assessing heart murmurs and pump function. The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
During the test, a technician applies gel to the chest and moves the transducer to capture images from various angles, offering a clear view of heart health.
At RCA, our cardiologists use echocardiography to provide accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans.
Types of Echocardiography
- Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE): This standard method provides clear images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow through the chest wall.
- Doppler Echocardiography: Doppler technology measures the speed and direction of blood flow, helping detect abnormal patterns or valve problems.
- Stress Echocardiography: This method combines echocardiography with exercise or medication to assess heart function under stress. It’s especially useful for diagnosing coronary artery disease.
Benefits
- Early Detection of Heart Conditions: Identify subtle abnormalities not seen in physical exams or basic imaging, making it vital for diagnosing heart murmurs, structural issues, and pump function.
- Real-Time, Accurate Imaging: It offers immediate feedback on heart health, enabling quick assessments.
- Risk-Free and Radiation-Free: The procedure is radiation-free, making it a safe, risk-free diagnostic tool.
What to Expect During the Test
The procedure is painless and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The patient lies on an exam table while a technician applies gel to the chest. The transducer is moved across the chest to capture images from various angles, offering a comprehensive assessment of heart function and blood flow.
