Leqvio Infusion
What is Leqvio Infusion?
Leqvio (generic name: Inclisiran) is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to a new class of treatments for high cholesterol. It is specifically designed to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol.
How Leqvio Works
Leqvio targets a protein in the liver called PCSK9, which controls the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood. By inhibiting this protein, Leqvio helps the liver clear more LDL cholesterol, lowering overall cholesterol levels.
Administration
Leqvio is administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) every 6 months. This long-acting dosing schedule makes it a convenient treatment option for patients who need regular cholesterol-lowering therapy but prefer fewer injections compared to daily or monthly alternatives.
Benefits of Leqvio
Reduces LDL Cholesterol by 50%: Leqvio can lower LDL cholesterol levels by around 50%, significantly reducing the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes.
Convenient Dosing: With only one injection every 6 months, Leqvio is highly convenient for individuals who struggle with daily medication regimens.
Effective for High-Risk Patients: Leqvio is particularly beneficial for individuals with genetic predispositions to high cholesterol or those who haven’t responded well to statins or other cholesterol-lowering medications.
Administration Process
Leqvio is typically given in a medical setting, either at your doctor’s office or an infusion center. A healthcare professional will administer the injection.
The first two doses are given 3 months apart, followed by subsequent doses every 6 months thereafter.
Side Effects
Leqvio is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include:
- Injection site reactions (pain, redness, or swelling).
- Headache or mild flu-like symptoms.
Leqvio offers an innovative solution for managing high cholesterol, especially for patients who need additional support beyond traditional statin therapy. With its convenient dosing schedule and ability to significantly lower LDL cholesterol, it provides a valuable option for those at risk of cardiovascular disease.
